General Motors announced on Tuesday that its autonomous taxi unit, Cruise, has resumed test operations in three cities. The self-driving cars will have human safety drivers on board to monitor and intervene if necessary. The decision to restart testing comes after Cruise suspended most of its operations following a pedestrian incident in San Francisco last year. As a result of the incident, California revoked Cruise’s license to operate autonomous vehicles in the state. Cruise is currently providing ride services in Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix using self-driving Chevrolet Bolt electric cars. The production of the Cruise Origin, a dedicated driverless cab, has been put on hold indefinitely. The company plans to eventually transition to a modified version of the Bolt, which will be more cost-effective than the Origin.
